Perimenopause is the transitional stage leading up to menopause, characterized by hormonal fluctuations (hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes) and irregular menstrual cycles.
Menopause diagnosed retrospectively after 12 months of no menstrual period. -
Perimenopause is diagnosed by age and symptoms. Irregular cycles may be one symptom, but it may not be. You can start by taking this survey and see where you land. https://www.menopause.org.au/images/stories/education/docs/AMS_Diagnosing_Menopause_Symptom_Score.pdf
-
If you are 44+ and having perimenopause symptoms, hormone testing is not indicated. Hormone testing can be very expensive and is not completely reliable in many cases as our hormones can fluctuate even throughout one day. Cases for seeking testing can include unexplained cycle irregularity/symptoms, age under 44, suspected infertility.
-
Fluctuation and declining estrogen can causing a decrease in integrity and moisture of the vulvar and vaginal tissues. These changes can cause dryness, painful sexual intercourse, onset or worsening of incontinence, prolapse symptoms, bowel issues, and other pelvic floor dysfunction.
Further, people experiencing perimenopause can benefit from certain lifestyle changes, including strength/resistance training. Dr. Natasha is highly skilled in helping women strength train in a safe way that can boost well-being, build/maintain muscle mass and bone health, and optimize performance in other activities.
Dr. Natasha is also a member of The Menopause Society and has access to evidence-based information to help you navigate this time and help you find the best information and healthcare team for your needs.
